more apps: Super Gnes Nesoid Gensoid (all emulators /also, I think they have a PSXoid or something now.) bartender epicurious Google Goggles Barcode Scanner (does QR codes too)
so i'm tryina run the Android emulator on my computer, but it's telling me I don't have the Java SDK installed, but I definitely do. what the shit?
Here's what apps I have: Spotify Facebook Advanced Task Killer (great for managing memory and saving battery life by not letting unnecessary programs run in the background all the time) Latitude (google map thing where you can see your friends on map) Shazam (recognizes music) IMDb MSN Talk Irssi ConnectBot Speed Test Barcode Scanner Color Flashlight (uses the screen as flashlight) Handcent SMS (best sms app i have used) Astro (for managing files) Games: psx4droid SNesoid Nesoid KGS Pinball Toss It Jewels Tetronimo Asphalt 5 (Samsung only)
Are you sure you have the SDK and not just the JRE? The two are very different. Automated task killers waste battery energy, they don't help. You have essentially a timed job to kill programs which start up on a timer. Instead of leaving them entirely idle in the background not doing a thing, you kill them, they start again, you kill them, they start again, wash rinse repeat. Anyone with actual experience in embedded development will tell you this. Get rid of ATK and your battery life will, in fact, increase.
^^ I have that too! Also for twitter, I have the "twitter" app, I use to use Tweetcaster but it kinda stopped working for me. I just wish they will update the facebook app soon.
yeah i'm sure it was the SDK. Anyway, i got it working. I was using the 32-bit one because i the site wasn't letting me get the 64-bit one. I figured it wouldn't have mattered.
I use the "twitter" app and the "facebook" app, too. Facebook one could do with a bit of work, but the Twitter one is quite good. I'm if anyone wants to follow me on Twitter. I don't tweet much though.
try touch.facebook.com on the browser, I like it a lot better than the app.. I just installed a new twitter app today it blows the one i had on there away and looks so pretty
Yeah I've been using the browser for my facebook. Since it actually shows notifications and what not.
What Facebook app version are you referring to? The latest version 1.3.2 is pretty sweet, with notification and all sorts of stuff. Pretty much everything the full site has except chat.
I have the lastest version 1.3.2 for facebook. I personally think it sucks. It does give you notifications but when you click the notification link, it sends you to the the actual website to facebook. Also the updates for the notifications aren't up to speed. I'd rather use the touch.facebook.com on the browser.
these are the main complaints i have read in the comments section of the update.. and the reason why i didnt download the latest one... the touch.facebook.com browser version is great.. have no probs with it...
This: Especially the comment about being sent to the actuall facebook website. Shit is so annoying. The latest iPhone FB app was pretty sweet. An Android version of that would do.
as for apps i've downloaded: music wizard classic tetris (full) t-mobile apppack quotations shopper stopwatch places directory espn scorecenter yellow pages pandora radio gmail unread count imdb movies & tv npr news craigslist photobucket mobile (having every photo on my phone automatically upload to my account online is the fucking greatest) foursquare msn talk last.fm facebook for android wikidroid for wikipedia shopping list flashlight google translate compass hello kitty theme (wtf? when did i download this?) usa today the weather channel redbox free codes fmylife fml official and then all of the factory installed apps that came with my samsung vibrant. i download a lot of shit.
My suggestions: WootWatcher Coin Flip (great way to decide who is going to do something at work) Dial Zero (a database of 1800 numbers for large companies) Cardiotrainer (logs your workout with GPS and google maps, displays average speed, distance etc) Epic Fails Music Alarm (wake up to what ever song you want) NASA Images (database of nasa images lots of cool photos) Sleep Timer (fall asleep to music and even pandora and you can set a timer to have it shut off)
I got the off the shelf body glove and the protector when I got the evo to make sure I don't scratch that shit in the first minute. Now I ordered and should be receiving a Seidio cover which rocks, all rubberized like your mother likes it, and a Zagg screen protector. Next on the list will be an extended battery for long travels from Seidio, 3500 mAh, that shit is beastly.
Quick question- I'm getting a Droid X next week and the battery life is notoriously short; is it worth it to download a task manager? I've read alternating reports of them both saving and eating up battery life.
My Incredible got the OTA froyo update yesterday And IllusionInc, I've always used a task manager so I don't really know what performance is like without it. I think it's nice to be able to clear up memory.
I vote no, most people that know more than I do about how Android works seem to agree with me. Sent from my PC36100 using Tapatalk
No. The programs will just launch up on their own anyway shortly after your task manager kills them, using up more CPU time than they do sitting idle doing absolutely nothing in the background. So instead of having idle processes doing nothing, with RAM in use but technically inactive that gets swapped out to disk if needed, you have an active process sweeping every minute or so to see which processes haven't been active in a while, are in list X, then killing them, forcing them to do I/O as they close down, and then you have the OS starting them back up again about a minute later, causing more I/O, wash rinse repeat. You're doing infinitely more than without one, simply because without one those applications sitting in the background for the most part do not do anything. See above. Bingo.
I've had first hand experience with the automated task killer and I got rid of that shit pretty quickly. I'd go in to the application, kill tasks and exit. By the time I could re-open the automated task killer app, 90% of the tasks I had killed were back on the list. As Thal has explained, it's a complete waste of resource. If you're worried about battery life on your Android, first thing you should do is bump the screen brightness down a notch. I've got it on the second level of brigthness (out of three possible options on my Desire) and it is perfect.
I'll get rid of the task manager and see how it effects my battery life, although I don't really have any issues with Galaxy S's battery life. The only thing that has bothered me is the camera, take a few dozen photos and you're definitely going to run out of battery before the day is over. Other than that, I can go on for 1-2 days without charging so that's sweet. The automatic brightness adjusting for the screen is useful too, that way it won't be unnecessarily bright indoors.
I have a droid X. Under the settings of most android phones their is a battery manager and it says what your phone battery is being used by. The display is always the first thing that uses around 50% to 60% of the battery life. As others have said keep the brightness down. Other than that if you have that screen lit up for a 2 to 3 hours in a day expect your battery to be drained. I don't know what people to expect out of a battery that small. Do people actually think that screen can be lit up for 6,7 or 8 hours and to go a couple days without charging it. Someone I worked with made a good statement. If batteries grew as exponentially fast as computer processors and hardware you could probably power a whole house on a few double AA sized batteries. Unfortunately battery technology has not grown hardly at all. I hear people all the time tell me about how their 4 year old flip phone could go 3 days with out a charge. I think great you made a couple calls on it over the 3 days and your screen was less than an inch big. No surprise. As for task killer. I use it only if an app freezes like Pandora. I don't try to keep apps from running in the background because some will always run no matter what. Those apps idling in the background are not using that much battery life.
I don't have an Android phone, but I extend the battery life of my phone by turning off my data connection whenever I'm not using it. The only real inconvenience is that I get picture messages a few hours later. Instead of using 80% of the battery in a day, it drains maybe 30%. If you can do that on Android, then it would help.
Yep, this is good too. I turn off my mobile data and my WiFi when I'm not using them. It's ridiculously easy to do, at least in 2.1 and 2.2. Not sure about earlier versions of Android though, but I'd assume it'd be just as easy.
For me, on my Evo, running CM6, cell standby and phone idle account for about 69%, display is 3%, Android system 10%, voice calls 21%. CM6 simply does absolutely nothing that's not necessary.
I would do that but I use GVoice, so my texts go through data and my outgoing calls are initiated via data.
Hm. I should probably seriously consider rooting and getting me some CM, but I'm pretty attached to my Sense UI at the moment.
I didn't mind sense, but I did mind not being able to use my three Exchange accounts with ActiveSync. Functionality is more important to me.
i dunno wtf about fones! but i bought a HTC Desire yesterday!! I don't know how to check my voicemail!! It seems like a GREAT PHONE THOUGH!!!!!!
Excellent choice! My voicemail got automatically added as a contact when I put in my SIM card, but I'm not sure if that'll be the same for all carrier SIMs
Got an LG Ally. Seems to score in the middle with reviews I read but I love it. I got it for 30 bucks which is pretty fucking neat.
it only took me maybe an hour to get used to. it took me longer to make the transition from keyboard to on-screen typing. this is easier.
