Though it's quite possible 2009 will have an album that blows the rest out of the water, I think it's safe to say we can start thinking about this now.

Here's my shortlist of contenders, heavily narrowed down from all my 5-star albums from this decade:

BT - This Binary Universe (2006)
Godspeed You! Black Emperor - Lift Your Skinny Fists Like Antennas to Heaven (2000)
The Mars Volta - De-Loused in the Comatorium (2003)
    Radiohead - Kid A (2000)
Shpongle - Nothing Lasts, but Nothing is Lost (2005)

If I had to narrow it down further, it would probably be between BT, Godspeed, and Shpongle. After that I'm really not sure though.

Killing Joke's Hosannas From the Basements of Hell is probably my biggest contender at this point.

Most of my favourites were released this decade.

Jane Doe is obviously my choice.

    Ulver- Perdition City
    Devin Townsend- Terria
    BT- This Binary Universe
Shpongle- Nothing Lasts... but Nothing is Lost
    OSI- Free

That's as far as I can narrow it down.

A lot of my tops are also from this decade. Specifically, Lateralus, Ys, and Kid A seem like the most qualified candidates for me.

He's laughing at 5/8. Get him!

Lateralus would probably be my pick, just what it means to me.

Anathallo's Floating World. Not even a lot of competition there for me. Only other ones I might consider would be maybe FOABP (lol) and Colors, and those albums just don't scream "best of decade" to me. I don't know why, but it seems like FW sits so much better in that category.

I'm just laughing at how none of those albums would be anywhere near my list for the decade.

And I do like BT, but I don't like This Binary Universe.

I think Lateralus has legitimate claim to the throne, despite being an early-decade release.

I would have said the same a few years ago. Now I would probably say Absolution or Kid A.

I'm not too crazy about this decade, though. I prefer older stuff.

    1. Nile - Annihilation of the Wicked
    2. Ulver - Blood Inside
    3. Radiohead - Kid A
4/5. Converge - Jane Doe/You Fail Me (it's impossible for me to choose in between the two)
    6. SikTh - Death of a Dead Day
    7. Decapitated - Organic Hallucinosis

    ... Fuck, this is hard.

I like both of those artists but album of the decade? Ugh. Both of them have better albums than those too.

Not a single mention for Blackwater Park? It wouldn't be my pick for album of the decade (though it's up there), but it seems strange that, knowing the forum's tastes, no one has even brought it up for consideration yet.

No way man. I could see preferring A Grand Don't Come for Free because it's more sweeping in scope, but preferring another Of Montreal album over Hissing Fauna is just a foreign concept to me.

Reverend Bizarre - So Long Suckers or Warning - Watching from a Distance or The Mars Volta - Frances the Mute. they're pretty much competing for my favourite album ever since most stuff i've heard is from this decade.

probably because, while it's a good album, it doesn't even come close to the caliber of most of the albums that have been discussed in this thread so far

While I adore Hissing Fauna, I prefer Satanic Panic. It's more consistently good, though HF has the better highs.

I'm going to make a thread!

    BT - This Binary Universe
    Joanna Newsom - Ys

probably a fight between those two.

Shpongle would be in the top 5 somewhere as well.

Hmm, I like all of his stuff and while I listen to Movement in Still Life, Emotional Technology, and ESCM more often, I still find TBU to be his biggest accomplishment.

I've listened to all of my favorites over the last few days, and I'm pretty sure TBU is going to win this for me. But we'll see in a year.

I was thinking about a cool idea last night: what if we do a big Album of the Decade poll at the end of 2009 or start of 2010? The same way we do the Hip-hop/Electronic/Jazz polls. Then my plan is to buy copies of all those albums and put them in a time capsule for the year 2050 (or maybe 2100) with some information about 5/8 and reviews of all the albums.

I thought of this idea because sometimes I wonder if people will know who these bands are in 100 years, due to the influence of the mainstream music press.

    Isis - Oceanic
TV on the Radio - Dear Science
    Muse - Absolution
    Wilco - Yankee Hotel Foxtrot

There's sooo much stuff I still want to hear though.

That's a good idea. We should also do a simulisten every week for the last 10 weeks of 2009 where we count down the consensus top 10
