Well, it sounds slightly different with each project he works with, at least partially due to different production/mixing/mastering/engineering techniques, etc., but he pretty much sticks to Les Pauls and his hot-rodded Marshalls.
BREAKING NEWS Mike Portnoy's wife thinks Adrenaline Mob is better than Dream Theater http://www.noisecreep.com/2011/06/23/mike-portnoy-excited-about-first-adrenaline-mob-gig/
I like how Russ was already working on this project before Portnoy got involved and now it's Mike Portnoy Presents Mike Portnoy, that vocalist Mike Portnoy discovered who sounds like Dio, a guitar that shreds to Mike Portnoy's Liking, and two other guys Mike Portnoy doesn't have a problem with. Having said that, I am looking forward to the show cause I am totally gay for Russell Allen.
I do think he's a great vocalist, don't get me wrong. I just, for some reason think everything with him on it sounds exactly the same. Could just be me.
MP knows this will work, the only people at the show will be their friends and family. Fantastic idea Mike!, a band play live!? AMAZING.
yay so we have another MP-getting-butthurt episode to look forward to when someone does record the tracks and post them on the net
I agree with him being fucking horrible, but I really don't see too much shred these days. Granted, I'm only really paying attention to the Djent-ish scene. All the same, though. I think this was true for a time, relatively recently like when Dragonforce was in their prime and all these other bands started shredding and sweeping or whatever. But I don't really consider that "being able to shred". To me, a true virtuosic shredder in a mainstream band is really rare. The closest thing I can think of is Synyster Gates, and he's not really all that good, he can just shred a little. But he's no virtuoso. I don't really even consider Zakk Wylde to be a virtuoso, really. He has like 10 shred licks that he recycles with a wah (I had the misfortune of seeing him live a little while ago, ugh). And in Djent, which in my world is quickly becoming the cool thing to do in metal, I really haven't heard any remotely impressive leads. Some good leads, sure, but nothing truly guitar virtuoso-esque, like Guthrie or Sfogli or Petrucci, whatever. This is here nor there, though. And god, I haven't heard the teaser yet but his tone is fucking horrible in that video. Why do shredders use wah pedals, ever? also: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YK33ujmHfUs&feature=youtu.be
I'm just waiting for the day Portnoy joins this forum and be all butthurt about comments and tries to make a bigger ass of himself
@unklejman I don't want to have to answer to that if I get caught! Look at the way his arms are folded. He means business.
I think they're cool when they're used sparingly, but it's not really any different than asking "why do guitarists shred, ever?," or "why do metal vocalists growl, ever?," or "why do guitarists use distortion, ever?"
Can't wait until Portnoy really decides to stir shit up and say in an interview "Yeah Mike Orlando is the best guitarist I've ever played with. Petrucci doesn't hold a candle to him", or something. Calling it now.
"I've always had lots of side projects in my life, but what's exciting for me is knowing that Adrenaline Mob is bigger than that. This is a real band with a real future and 11 new songs that I think the fans are going to flip for." Somethnig about this sounds like utter BS to me. Russell Allen does side projects all the time, I don't see him ditching symph X to join any of them full time.
MP seemed to think this is his chance to jump start Mike Orlando's career, but with his douchebag image and mediocre shredding, it may do just the opposite (although maybe not, it worked for Zakk Wylde). I'd much prefer Rich Ward play the leads, even though he's not as much of a "virtuoso." MP said in another interview that this won't be a full-time or primary band for them. Yeah, I was a little worried that after the new DT drummer was announced and we heard MP's initial reaction, the drama would be over, but oh no, this just keeps on giving and giving.
I saw these girls running around in shirts with this on it last night at a concert. I thought they said Adrenaline Mob. Nope. But the guitarist is 13.
I bet this band and his other projects would have gotten a much better and respectful reception had MP not been acting like a self-indulgent douche ever since the breakup.
For someone who is big on bootlegs and whatnot, MP is being a giant fag with this 'NO RECORDING PLZ THIS IS SPESHAL' bullshit.
