did not read let me guess: it will be the greatest thing in the world, they have the most talented musicians in the industry, especially in the drums department, and the album will RAWK.
How the fuck does Portnoy get less and less likeable each time he opens his mouth these days? Does he have no self-awareness as to what an egomaniac douchebag he sounds like in these interviews? Ugh, that was one of the worst ones yet.
"As much as Symphony X has a good following in the underground cult prog world" --- wtf is the underground cult prog world? "I took Symphony X out on tour with Dream Theater in 2007 in Europ" --- No Mike, Dream theater took them out on tour. "When things are really clicking, I don't need any more than seven to 10 days." --- ... Mike should finally be happy now that he isn't in a band with JLB.
It's gonna take me a lot of listening to actual good music to forget that minute and a half of shit I just heard
What do you think the odds are that they cover some of Portnoy's heavy DT tunes so he can finally hear them with a manly vocalist? In all seriousness, I am cheering for some good Dio covers. If they don't play Stargazer, The Sign of the Southern Cross, and Heaven and Hell, I am marching up to Portnoy and demanding that he refunds my $10.
I know they are talented enough to pull off the songs, I just think they'll try to make them sound more like Adrenaline Mob than the bands they come from.
I think this could be good, Seeing as MP hasn't written any lyrics and the songs were made before he got involved.
How is that a bad thing? What's the point of doing a cover if you don't at least attempt to give it some kind of new or different spin/personality? I've never understood bands that try to create carbon copies of the songs they are covering.
First off, the guitar tone sucks. I hope they change it. Now, with a name like Adrenaline Mob, the guys were clearly going for a rather mainstream sounding band name. I don't have a problem with it. But I predict the problem will be that however good (or bad and generic) this album actually turns out to be, they still wont get any kind of coverage or radio play or anything. Why? Because Mike Portnoy and Russell Allen are in this band. No matter how hated Portnoy is on this forum, he still has tremendous talent, and well, Russell Allen has one of the greatest voices I've ever heard. So then why will Adrenaline Mob fail to go mainstream? Because MP and RA belong and belonged to Symphony X and Dream Theater. Two popular bands only to underground Metal fans, and with that status alone, radio stations will refuse to play anything associated with them, much like how radio stations refuse to play anything new by Dream Theater however radio friendly their new songs are. Prog and Power metal aren't the popular breed to everyday radio listeners, and radio stations wont waste their time even listening to it. I could be dead wrong though. I hope I am. Everything I said is based on hearsay and just how fucked up the music industry and mainstream radio is, but that's my prediction. I'll have a back up prediction in case this one fails, all the while stealing your money.
For an up and coming band, being on the radio or MTV means everything. No matter how shitty the radio is (and it's pretty fucking shitty) it's the best place to gain exposure.
To me, it is strange how he can come off really well in some interviews, and then come off like an egomaniac in others...like this on. I just think he is probably laying the patting himself on the back stuff a bit thick these days since he has to still be reeling from the DT thing. Hell, on the Neal Morse tour he was a part of last month, he tweeted about it, calling it the MP/NM extravaganza. It was a Neal Morse show, with Mike Portnoy as one of the supporting players (albeit the most well-known one), but leave it to him to not only give himself equal billing with Neal, but to put his name first when referring to it.
Doesn't he have anyone in his life that he can trust/respect who's man enough to pull him aside and be like "dude, you need to do some serious image rehab... you come off like an absolute cockgoblin most of the time, and many of your twitter and FB fans that you're so proud of racking up are actually only following you for the schadenfreude factor"
by that same logic, radio stations should play it because MP and RA are so "underground" that hey won't mind who's in it and just play the music. of course, they'll remove it promptly after they realize it strains their ears. also, it's been a while since Dream Theater has been an obscure act. they may not me as popular as Beyonce, but they no longer make you look cool if you namedrop them to music fans. in fact, it makes you look ridiculous most of the time, and partly not without reason given the band's last few albums
also why do you even mention the fact that they're mainstream, who gives a crap, they suck because the music's shit
Russell Allen really isn't a very versatile singer. Sure, he can sing melodic soulful stuff as well as meaner, raspy sounding stuff, but most projects with his voice on them sound the same to me.
The problem with this project is that these guys could be the second coming of Metallica, and a lot of people are still going to pan them no matter what just because Portnoy is involved. I wouldn't say that it comes anywhere close to "sucking," but it's not nearly as ballsy as Rich Ward's tone usually is (although the clips are so short and I don't know how much of the rhythm guitars are his vs. Mike Orlando's). Maybe that's just an early scratch mix and the real deal will sound more like this. Can't agree there, Russ is one of the most badass vocalists in metal, particularly on a track like "Inferno."
What do you want him to do, rap like Gildenlol? Do complete death growls and black metal shrieks? How much more versatile does he need to be? When I find music he has guest vocals on, I expect him to sound like Russell Allen, not Waspinator just for the sake of it. Not any more cheesy than death vocals or screams in general. I like Into Eternity, and think the growls and shrieks sound cool, but at the same time, it's pretty cheesy if you think about it.
I'm not sure whether you're saying that's what the AM tone sounds like, or if you're referring the SM track I posted.
Adrenaline Mob. The Stuck Mojo guitar tone sounds fine. It sounds a lot like the Fozzy tone. Guess he doesn't change it for other bands he's in. Well, except AM it would seem. PORTNOY GOT TO HIM!!!
