http://www.usatoday.com/news/religion/2010-09-07-church-quran-burning_N.htm Since this will ultimately lead to the deaths of U.S. troops, I must admit I am in favor of it.
whatevs, American churches are renegade organizations anyways thx for making the Vatican look progressive
I don't know about America, but in the rest of the (civilized) world the actions of American Christians are largely dismissed as the work of some loons (which it usually is). Then again that explains why people over there have such a dim view of Christianity/ religion in general
God I hope so. I love it because anyone who calls out Muslims for trolling and being assholes (even if you support their right to do it) is a bigot/Islamaphobic/assumed to be a tea-bagger/all sorts of horrible shit, but when someone wants to use those same constitutional rights to be an asshole and troll Muslims (whose continued inability to cope with even minor ones makes them hypocrites for even attempting to pull off ones of their own anyway), calling them out on it is encouraged, along with aggressively insisting that he shouldn't do it. Oh wait, I forgot...this sort of shit is only funny when it happens to white people
Kinda funny how the Islamic (and Western) world is more up in arms over the Qur'an burning and the Ground Zero Mosque placement than over that Iranian chick who is to be stoned to death for being pictured without a veil or something. Religious people really love their symbols and their ideologies. Their people, not so much.
lol, they demonstrated with the Phelps clan. http://www.doveworld.org/blog/in-support-of-westboro-baptist This will be such a great troll.
While I certainly don't side with the pastor, I'm seeing some inconsistency in the liberal reaction to this... Remember when there was that whole thing with drawing Mohammad in some European country. There were death threats from the fanatics in the middle east for the guy that drew that famous picture of Mohammad with a bomb head. The liberal media responded by reprinting those pictures in other newspapers as a show of solidarity for freedom of speech. But now the liberal media wants to condemn this guy for something that is no more or less offensive. Why the change? I think the reason is that the Mohammad pictures were from secular sources and the quran burning is from a Christian source, and the liberal media hates Christianity and loves people who don't believe in god. I'm an atheist but I find this bias in the media inappropriate.
I dunno, you're comparing apples and oranges. Drawing pictures of a prophet is provocative, but it's not as trollish as burning Qur'ans. The former was meant to poke a finger in the eye of fundamentalists (though it did end up pissing off liberal Muslims too), but the latter is pretty obviously intended to troll all Muslims, conservative and liberal alike. I do agree that liberals are going to naturally react in revulsion to this, as the perpetrators are Christians and the victims are the scapegoat du jour.
Headline after it happens: Idiotic Paranoid Attention-whore of a Pastor Burns Muslim Holy Books in the Name of "love your enemies" Jesus Christ
I would bet only a small fraction... of course, I am including all Christian faiths, including Catholics.
If you're right, the sad thing is those same Christians will conflate his actions with the actions of the GZM imam, as if their behaviours are even remotely similar.
Come to think of it, what I said could eventually be wrong because when fanning the flames of both ignorance and fear, the fire is certain to spread.
Sarah Palin has spoken (and predictably conflated the book-burning with the GZM in the same post where she defends religious freedom). http://www.facebook.com/note.php?note_id=427813493434

It looks like a moot point as the crazy pastor has come to his senses and is not going through with the burn.
yep... Westboro Baptist Church, the small Topeka, Kan., church that pickets funerals of American soldiers to spread its message that God is punishing the country for being tolerant of homosexuals, has vowed to hold a Quran burning if Gainesville’s Dove World Outreach Center calls its off. “WBC burned the Koran once – and if you sissy brats of Doomed america bully Terry Jones and the Dove World Outreach Center until they change their plans to burn that blasphemous tripe called the Koran, then WBC will burn it (again), to clearly show you some things,” the church announced in a news release this week.
"Terry Jones claims New York Muslims have agreed to move Islamic centre further away from Ground Zero" god fucking dammit if that's true.
