4-string bass- pick me one (gimme some dan up in this bitch) I want a 4-string bass, but I only really know what I would want when it comes to a 5 or 6-strings bass in my price range. 4-string brands are a new deal to me. Im looking for between $400-600 range. Pickups are kind of a deal with me because my current bass (washburn bantam bass 6-string) has terrible mids while the lows get pretty thick and muddy. i like thick warm bass sound (not too warm) but I want that all around the fretboard ranges. I would probably go passive and with humbuckers (why? i dont know its a complete assumption based on an uneducated guess, which is what professionlol does best) Before, I really liked the Traben Chaos series because they had the uber-hyped bigger bridge, a 35" scale, and humbuckers. but that was when I was shopping for a 5-string, now i have no idear. Im not trying to get too expensive here because I would rather spend the money on a good rig than a shiny bass.\ I would be playing dance, or post-hardcore with this bass
I dislike fenders. You can tell me how good it is, i just hate seeing them. Im sure they are great, but I am opposed to it simply because everybody seems to use them. I played a geddy lee sig once, it was alright edit: oh wait, just realized that was chrono who posted that, haha i get it now
edit: I don't currently have one, but if I were to buy a 4-string, I would get a jazz bass because it's a classic and awesome sound.
Honestly, this is your safest bet. For your price range I doubt you'll find much better. There's a good reason why so many people play them. As an alternative, Ibanez have started putting Bartolini pickups in their mass-market basses these days, which is nice. But at the end of the day, they're still made of firewood, so meh. You could always try a Peavey Grind, if you can find a nice one. They're a bit hit and miss on the quality control, but still worth a try.
I hate things that other people have. I wish to be unique above all else, and put practicality, usefulness, and soundness below my purported uniqueness. Come on, there's a reason it's one of the most popular basses.
chrono is right on the fucking money here. i had a jazz, and it was excellent. couldn't get the tone to be exactly what i wanted though so i opted for a much more expensive p bass. still, it's a good suggestion.
well my jazz bass was a squier and my p bass is much better... meh. for what i play, it's perfect. if i played anything else, i'd probably swing for a jazz.
MAKE SURE SHINA GETS INFRACTED FOR THAT BLATANT PERSONAL ATTACK. IT'S EVEN MORE BLATANT THAN THE OBLIGATORY "FAGGOT" I LATCHED ONTO THE END OF MY FIRST POST.
lol i probably deserve to be called a faggot, but it would take a lot for me to get a fender product. the hell is kbrooks to advertise rondo/brice basses like he always does? y- yeah? ive been told that pete wentz still uses a squire on stage. plus most practical musicians I know care way more about their amp rig than their instrument. maybe if i played in a audiophilic type of genre i can understand going for the most practical choice (mendez comes to mind), but this is like vocal-centric style music
This. Personally though, the bass with the best value as far as cheaper basses go (for me) is the Ibanez ATK (The Japanese ones are great). They kind of do the MusicMan thing, if stressed for a comparison.
The amp is going to make the biggest difference, but the instrument has a significant effect. With that said, Squire's are rarely "bad'. Still, Fenders sound good and built good and are reasonably priced.
my one bass instructor used a Squire as his main bass. Squires are just really inconsistent in their build quality. Some are trash, some can rival US-made Fenders. edit: if it wasn't a Fender for a 4-string, it'd probably be a Warwick (depending on the kind of music I was playing), but that's looking at double your price range. In terms of overall quality, versatility, etc. a jazz bass is seriously your best bet.
http://bass-guitars.musiciansfriend.com/product/Spector-Legend-Classic-4String-Bass?sku=517435 is this no good? and what about this? http://bass-guitars.musiciansfriend.com/product/Ibanez-SRA300-Electric-Bass-Guitar?sku=423070 i like the specs of these, is there anything i should be concerned about with them?
The Specter could be a nice option. I hate the skinny Ibanez necks. They feel like they're going to break off in my hands.
Specter But yeah, you can't go wrong with Spector. However the Ibanez ATK series have a big neck, sooooo
I have a Spector, Ibanez, and Rickenbacker. I'm not totally happy with any of them. I'm going to get a Fender Jazz Bass soon.
my old bassist had a $700ish aerodyne and an ampeg 8x10 (i think it was 8x10) and his tone was always really punchy and gritty. Im sure to most bass players that is great tone, but Id prefer a more smooth and warm tone, while letting the kick drum take care of my punch. was his sound more of an effect from his tone control or from his fender? because if its a matter of tone control, then I wouldnt be as opposed to getting one
