Default Is multiplayer really necessary for every game?

This thread came about after my post in the Bioshock 2 thread, where I said that multiplayer for a game like that seems unnecessary.

What do you think? Obviously games like COD, TF2, etc. need multiplayer, but Bioshock?

In your opinion, do games these days require a multiplayer component for people to want to buy them? Or do games like Fallout 3 or Dragon Age, with their replay value, work just as well?

I've thought it silly when people complained about no multiplayer in some games, I think that if the single player story is good and there's varied gameplay each time through, unlockable items/weapons/armor etc, then the game doesn't need multiplayer.

What do you think?

I agree, they absolutely don't need multiplayer, and I'll take it one step further and say they don't need a bunch of unlockables or different paths or difficulty levels either.

It's not that I don't appreciate these things when they're good, but the sheer addition of them is a really superficial reason to buy/like a game.

Most games have shit multiplayer, so they definitely dont need it.

If i wanted to play with others i would get a game specifically designed with that in mind, they generally are a much better experience.

90% of all multiplayer games are boring as fuck, so no, they definitely don't.

I have a few favorite multiplayer games that are staples of many times I'm together with friends, and a couple of online-capable games as well, but honestly, probably 4 in every 5 games (or maybe 9 in 10) that I bother to spend time playing is single player. But I spend a *lot* of time playing games from past generations, so who knows. If I had any current-gen systems and was into newer games, then I might be more of a multiplayer advocate.

Responding the the thread title: no. Adventure/RPGs for instance can be built for multiplayer, but only in single player can the benefits of a good immersive plot be maximized. Another more extreme example would be dating sims/visuals novels, the epitome of ronery player game.

This.

And not only do most games have shit multiplayer, but the time spent developing that shit multiplayer mode with half-assed effort because it's expected could be better spent fine-tuning the core of the game instead.

To be honest I'm enjoying the multiplayer more in Bioshock 2 than the single player.

the worst example of multiplayer becoming way too important in gaming is MAG. i mean, really? a game that doesn't even have a single player campaign? i dunno, i find that shit highly gay and useless. multiplayer, especially in FPS is just boring to me.

I much prefer single player. To be honest I think playing multiplayer online for thousands upon thousands of hours just killed it for me. Its kind of weird. For the longest time I was like OMG I'm playing with/against REAL people, its fucking awesome! Like, they do shit like, not programmed, like they think of it.

But now I'm like man these people are fucking idiots/noobs/retards/shitfaces I just wish they were computers and I could just play with my friends in my room of doom.
